actually I’d beg to differ.
In the 1960's the social structure in America allowed for a lot more people to purchase sporty vehicles, and the sheer numbers of options available were enough to confuse most individuals, and frighten the rest. At no other point in history will there ever be a vehicle that a common man could go out and buy, that would offer more uniqueness and performance per dollar. Couple that with the amazing driving experiences these machines delivered, and you have an era of cars that are all just pleasures to be around.
so yes, todays cars are marvels of tech and performance, but you can't beat the old school, even if you're trying to

Sure, a 64 GTO cost around $25k when adjusted for inflation, and it got from 0-60 in 4.6, but the average car cost $17k. That’s around a 45% premium compared to the average car. The average car nowadays costs $30k, with a Mustang GT (a quicker car) costing only about 30% more than the average new car. So therefore, it’s actually proportionally cheaper to buy a muscle car today than it was in the 60s.

But a 65 Mustang with a V8 was about $2500, or just shy of $19000 now. The GTO is more similar to a modern Chevy SS than a Mustang.
Also the average household income for 1965 was 6450 vs 52250 in 2015, so your 65 Mustang took 39% of your income vs 62% for 2015/16. Your money went further

I would argue for 1974 as being the best time for automotive enthusiasts. The oil crisis just ended, used muscle cars were dirt cheap, and their was a flood of British and Japanese sports cars. You could even buy a used Ferrari, 300SL, or GT40 for the price of a new Cadillac. Le Mans winning technology for family car prices.

Well let’s see. Hardly any sports cars exist below 2,500 pounds anymore. Thick pillars make visibility a pain. “Black boxes” record and (possibly) upload your actions constantly. Downsized, lower-revving engines are the norm. Low hoodlines and pop-up headlights are impossible for pedestrian crash regs. Manufacturers have to pipe in sound to the interior because cars are so quiet and isolated. Anyone’s grandma can paddle shift a supercar to a 10-second 1/4 mile without any skill needed. Bentley is selling CUV’s and Porsche is developing and all-electric sedan.
Yeah I’ll stay right here in 1969.

Assuming both were brand new and you’d be footing the bill for each, would you rather drive 100,000 miles in a 2015 Mustang Ecoboost Performance Package, or 100,000 miles in a 1965 Mustang GT? If it were my money, I’d much rather have the newer, safer, more reliable, better-warrantied car. A better horse, so to speak. Don’t get me wrong, I love the classics. It’s just that when we look at how far we’ve come, there’s never really been a better time for new cars.

I wouldn’t exactly go that far. A 75 Eldorado was $9935 when new, as opposed to the average of $3800. That means the Eldorado is a little over 2.6 times as expensive as the average car. If it were proportional to the average new car price in 2015, it would be around $87,256. Given the fact that we’re looking at ten to twenty year old technology, you could pick up this beautiful Ferrari 360 , or this GT3 , or even this ZR1 Corvette for less than that price, all of which have racing pedigree. Sure, you could have picked up a GT40 for the cost of an Eldorado, but saying that you could get a street-legal Le Mans car for the cost of a family car is more than a bit of a stretch.

in that case you could get a used Z/28 or GT350 for a song back in the day. For modern street cars, I am ambivalent about the performance.

And I’m perfectly content with my underpowered, overweight, 1992 Grand Marquis with non-functioning AC and radio. I would even prefer something older and simpler. I do admit the amount of car you can get for you money today is amazing. Here’s hoping it only gets better.
